Most of the time, clowns are meant to be funny. But sometimes their image is
twisted round and we become scared of clowns.

What can you do to overcome your coulrophobia?

OK, you're probably not going to be walking down the street and suddenly come
face to face with a clown. But there are other times when these circus types
appear out of almost nowhere - street carnivals, toy shops, television shows
and the like.

Here are some tips to help you overcome your phobia of clowns:

1. If you're able to, delve into the reasons for your fear. List them in order
of scariness, least scary first. Then see if you can rationalize away your
fears. If your phobia of clowns is relatively mild, there's a good chance that
this will work for you or at least reduce how scared you are when a clown
unexpectedly appears in your life.

2. Learn to relax "on command". Practice relaxing, using techniques such as
deep breathing. The more used you become to relaxing when you want to, the more
you'll be able to relax almost instantly. Then the next time you encounter a
clown, remember to relax and take the meeting or vision in your stride. And if
you feel yourself starting to hyperventilate, take some deep breaths until you
can get away from the problem clown.

3. Talk to your doctor or other health professional. Short term, it may be
worthwhile investigating anti anxiety medications. You wouldn't want to use
these on a regular basis, but they can help you short term and allow you to
work out better ways to help with your fear.

4. If you're able to, befriend a clown. You may find a performer who was at a
children's party. Talk with them in "real life" to help find out that the
person behind the clown's mask is a real, normal human being. Or

5. Investigate the self help methods that are best able to overcome fears and
phobias. Either visit a local hypnotist or download a specialist hypnosis MP3
that will work with you to dissolve your fear of clowns with almost no effort
on your part.

However you decide to tackle your fear of clowns, it's worth doing. You can't
control if or when you'll encounter a clown - their image is used in movies, on
magazines, on toys, even in fast food restaurants. So it makes sense to work on
overcoming your fear. It can be done - honest!
