Is the reverse osmosis membrane the most effective type of water filtration
system? In fact, the reverse osmosis system is a type of hyper filtration
which removes a majority of contaminants from water. The secret to the
advanced filtration is in the membrane.

Pollutants and microorganisms in water are of various microscopic sizes. The
reverse osmosis system works by forcing water under pressure through a
semi-permeable membrane that has even smaller pore sizes. In most cases the
filter is designed to allow only water to pass through the dense membrane
layer, while preventing the passage of contaminants and solutes, which are
rejected as waste water. A reverse osmosis filter will remove particles larger
than 1 angstrom.

Reverse osmosis filters are extremely effective for large scale industrial and
commercial uses. However, they are not necessarily the best home water filter
because they also remove so much from the water that they also strip out
healthful minerals that also make the water taste good. Another downside is
that they are very expensive to install compared to many other excellent
options.

Also, reverse osmosis systems waste a lot of water, typically purifying only
about 5-15% of water that is forced through the filter, while the rest is
discharged as waste water. Given that water is in short supply in many areas
of the world, this is pretty wasteful.

Also consider that these systems will require regular maintenance and
monitoring to perform well over time. You should test your water before
investing in an expensive filter system, to be sure you get the proper
equipment. Also factor in on-going maintenance and support costs when
comparing this to other units. All costs should be considered when comparing
to other systems before making a decision.

There are better options for a home water filtration system. Just do a little
research on-line, or use the manufacturer's specification sheet to understand
the differences between each type of system. Most filters will remove at least
some of the following contaminants, which are often found in tap water:

Lead
Chlorine
VOCs
Drugs
Microorganisms and cysts
Fluoride
Toxins
THMs (Trihalomethane compounds)
Carcinogens

There is good cause to be concerned about the quality of your drinking water,
because ingestion of many of these contaminants is still under research to
determine the long-term health ramifications. Our public water systems were
never initially designed to handle the removal of many of these pollutants.

There are many affordable home water filter systems that are available to help
you feel confident and secure that the water you and your family are ingesting
is safe and pure. You don't need to spend a small fortune on a reverse osmosis
membrane type of filtration system in order to get great healthy water.
