Having a fear of doctors is quite common.

Maybe it isn't a completely rational fear, but then that's the case with most 
any fear or phobia.

So how can you get over your fear of visiting a doctor? After all, even the 
healthiest person needs to visit them every now and then...

1. Work out when your fear first began. Maybe it was a childhood visit, maybe 
it was because a loved one had a problem that a doctor failed to cure. Whatever 
the cause, see if you can work out when your fear began. That way you can start 
working on it. Most times, our fears are actually pretty cowardly. And as soon 
as you start to close in on your fear, there's a good chance it will run away 
and leave you alone.

2. Find a phobia-friendly doctor. Like dentists (who a lot of people are also 
afraid of), some doctors handle patients who are afraid of them better than 
others. Ask around until you find a doctor who knows this is a real fear and 
who will work with you to overcome it or at least reduce it. Maybe they'll let 
you visit with a friend, maybe they've got extra staff on hand. It may even be 
as simple as your doctor not wearing the usual white coat!

3. Find a local support group. This may be a group that addresses various 
fears, rather than focusing solely on people who are afraid of doctors, but you 
should be able to find a support group to help.

4. If your fear is more to do with needles or other things that your doctor may 
use whilst examining you, recognize that fear instead. The more you narrow down 
a fear, the smaller it can become.

5. Ask your doctor to keep you informed. Because they do their job day in, day 
out, some doctors can miss explaining the things they are doing whilst they're 
working with you. Make sure they explain everything that's happening and why 
it's being done. Again, this should help to reassure you that they are there to 
help you, rather than your fear's worry that they actually mean you harm.

6. Talk things through with an understanding friend or work colleague. 
Oftentimes our fears reduce or even disappear completely when we vocalize them. 
Talking things through with an understanding friend may be all that you need to 
help you to overcome your fear.

7. Get professional help. If everything else hasn't worked, find a professional 
who specializes in getting rid of people's fears and phobias. Look in your 
local Yellow Pages for a hypnosis or NLP expert, ideally one who mentions that 
they can help get rid of fears and phobias in their advert. Don't worry if they 
don't specifically mention the fear of doctors in their advert, the techniques 
they use work well for all fears that we suffer from.
