Thunderstorms: loud crashes and bangs. Random flashes of light, momentarily
lighting up the otherwise sky. Nature unleashing power that mankind can still
only dream about making.

Depending on your viewpoint, thunderstorms are either things to marvel at or
they're something to cower away from. Some people find them so thrilling that
they even chase storms.

But if you're unfortunate enough to be one of the many people who are afraid of
thunderstorms, there are a few things you can do to help reduce or maybe even
completely eliminate your phobia.

1. Trace your fear to its roots

Chances are when you were younger, you fell into the group of people who are
fascinated by these displays of the force of nature. But there was likely a
"trigger" event that turned you almost instantly into someone for is in fear of
thunderstorms. If you're able to find this "trigger" event without causing
yourself undue stress, you can almost certainly use a few simple tricks to
remove your fear quickly and easily.

2. Learn a relaxation technique

Whilst it's not always easy to relax in the height of a storm, if you take time
out to learn a relaxation technique whilst it's relatively calm outside, this
will help you to endure the storm when it does arrive. If there's a storm on
its way as you're reading this then you haven't got chance to learn a
relaxation technique. In this instance, make sure you breathe in as deeply and
slowly as possible. And do the same as you breathe out. This will help calm
your nerves until the thunderstorm passes.

3. Find a viewpoint

If it's safe to do so, drive to a viewpoint that's away from the direction the
storm is taking and watch it unfold before your eyes as if you're watching a
giant movie.

4. Research why thunderstorms happen

This may sound odd, but if you know a bit about the science behind these unruly
feats of nature, you may begin to reduce your fears and worries. Spend some
time reading up on storms to see if this works for you.

5. Get help

You can track down a local NLP practitioner or download a hypnosis track to
listen to. Your choice will depend on whether you want to keep your fear to
yourself or not. Either method will get to the root cause of your phobia and
will help to erase it quickly and easily.
