Do Not Make Excuses For Your Lack
Of Effort In Transferring Your Heritage Language To Your Next Generation
Immigrant parents are usually very busy and they often have
their plates really filled up that it is sometime very difficult to have a free
time. There are lots and lots of expectations from very angle and little time
to do all that needs to be done. However, we will often create time for
whatever is priority and is of great
importance to us. Remember the saying,”where there is a will, there is a way” .
We are aware of the fact that there is
so much to be done, food needs to be on the table, bills has to be paid, other
expectations from relatives, friends, work etc. We are so busy that we hardly
have time for any
other thing, ours is really a busy world.
Immigrant parents can innocently make excuses for their
inability to take out time into teaching their children heritage language to
their because of the fact that they are desperately trying to make ends meet
and they think that transferring their heritage language could take the back
seat, it is of less priority. We very
much identify with you since we have been that road ourselves, however, when
time is the excuse, we believe that there are easy, fun, stress less, non time
consuming ways that immigrant parents can transfer their heritage language to
their kids. You will only need to be creative and be ready to make the best use
of those teachable moments that comes when your children ask you questions.
If you are passionate about your heritage language and
culture and will like to see your children learn and speak the language, then
you should make it a priority and use every little moment available to make
sure that you are planting little seeds of your heritage language and culture
into your kids, you will be greatly surprised by how much your child can grasp
from those moments. Telling them stories about your culture while driving to
the soccer practice, watching movies from your home country together with them,
telling them what simple house hold items are called in your heritage language
etc are few examples of how you can easily pass on your heritage language and
culture to your children.
We will realize that
if we can put our heart into this venture, it does not require that you stop
putting food on the table for you family in order to have your kids speak your
heritage language. We really do not have
to put in our 24hrs into teaching them. A little time here and there can be
more than enough and we can also
engage them with other resources like language software that are hands off for
parents.
Teaching your children your heritage language can be fun and
fulfilling. It can be your most rewarding experience ever with the most far
reaching results that will bring joy to your life in the years to come, when
your children will be able to converse with you in your heritage language
fluently, then you will realize that the effort you took in teaching your
children your heritage language in spite of all was an effort that is worth
going all the way for.
