Recently, a number of CDs, machines, and MP3 players have been developed with white noise and sound therapy specifically for babies. However, while most people have a general idea of what this is and what it does, some have no idea. Because white noise has been studied and proven successful in helping babies sleep and relax, every mom and dad should know all about it. Whether a baby is sick, transitioning, restless, teething, or simply cranky, white noise can help. The most fascinating aspect of white noise is that it is not noise at all. Instead, this is a sound frequency heard by humans as more of a hiss. When used as an application in helping babies sleep, children relax, and adults de-stress, the sound is more like the sound of a cascading waterfall, ocean surf, or the rustling of leaves caused by a gentle breeze. People could envision white noise as being a rainbow of frequencies heard by the human ear. While it might seem that white noise would be more distracting to a fussy baby than beneficial, the truth is that it actually helps to block out or absorb distracting noise. Therefore, to create a peaceful environment for a baby, white noise coupled with gentle sound is the perfect combination. As the white noise blocks out people talking, dogs barking, outside traffic, and so on, the sound conditioner would create gentle sound that lulls the baby to sleep. Another interesting fact about white noise is that to promote calmness, white noise should be sounds such as an air purifier, fan, or anything with a lower tone. On the other hand, vacuum cleaner or hair blower pitches are better for babies in that they prefer white noise with a higher pitch. The great thing about white noise and babies is that it works for a variety of situations. As an example, if a baby had an ear infection or was teething then the best type of white noise would be a middle of the road pitch coupled with soothing sounds such as ocean waves, rain, or perhaps a soft lullaby. Then for a baby that is restless, perhaps overly tired, using white noise helps in that equal frequencies of all sounds are used. The result is loud, distinctive noises that would annoy or even startle a baby are alleviated. Seeing a beautiful baby sleeping peacefully because of white noise and soft sounds is the ultimate reward.
