There are so many illnesses that our children are at risk of contracting, and
these impact not only the lives of the sick kids but also their families.

Haemophilus influenzae Type b, or Hib, is one of the most dangerous diseases of
children and also one of the causes of bacterial meningitis in children. An
infection of the coverings of brain and spinal cord, meningitis occurs mostly
in children and young adults. Also at risk are adults and people with long-term
health problems, such as a weakened immune system. Severe, fever and persistent
headaches, vomiting, stiff and painful neck, confusion and decrease level of
consciousness, sluggishness, skin rashes and eye sensitivity are symptoms of
meningitis. Bacterial meningitis can cause hearing loss, brain damage, mental
retardation and even death in children.

Haemophilus influnzae Type b is a type of bacteria that causes serious sickness
in around 3 million people and an estimated 380 thousand deaths per year all
over the world, mainly through meningitis and pneumonia. Almost all victims are
children under the age of five, with those between four and 18 months of age
most at risk. Haemophilus influnzae meningitis is an infant killer which leaves
up to 35 percent of survivors with permanent disabilities, such as mental
deafness or hold-up.

The Swiss research-based health-care company has launched its combination
vaccine against hepatitis B, tetanus, diptheria, pertussis and Haemophilus
influenzae Type b infection - the five diseases that cause severe sickness and
death in young people worldwide. This pentavalent vaccine is the first
internationally available fully liquid vaccine against these important
childhood diseases, offering a main advantage in terms of convenience of use.

Because they provide protection against more than one disease with a single
injection, combination vaccines give patients the additional benefits of
convenience and cost savings. Children experience less pain and distress with
fully liquid combination vaccines. All these promote compliance which, in turn,
results in timely immunization and increased and assured protection.

Medical professionals urge parents to work more close with their family doctors
to ensure that the strong recommendation about immunization schedule of their
kids is followed. To that end, the Swiss research-based health-care company is
committed to working with government organizations, the medical community and
other stakeholders to not only provide effective medicines and vaccines, but
also raise awareness about meningitis and the need to be vaccinated.

To draw attention to meningitis and its destructive causes and effects, the
worldwide Confederation of Meningitis Organizations designated April 25, 2009,
as the first World Meningitis Day.
