A year or so ago, my dabbling with a website on a theme that impassioned me was a great outlet for my creativity and thirst for learning, as well as a better way to spend my evenings than watching TV and thinking up excuses to skip the gym. I found a new audience for my recipes and ideas, and enjoyed learning about the tools and mechanics behind the internet I had lapped up for years as a pure 'consumer' with no thoughts about how it all ticked. I also enjoyed helping friends get started with their websites, and empowering other Moms to follow their interests and desires - stopping the brain rotting between the babyfood and the playdough and trying to keep up with the older kids' browsing and co-creation habits. It's all changed now though, for so many of us. Those little 'lifestyle businesses' designed as creative outlets now have to be seen as serious second incomes - the kind of resource-building we all need as the traditional job-type-stuff either winds down, gets more vulnerable, or in some cases simply dries up altogether. My friend's partner had been in the same job for 18 years, with a huge financial institution, they had simply never had to think entrepreneurially as EVERYTHING - lifetime career path followed by comprehensive pension - was planned for. Their world has been turned on its head, and - all credit to them - they are rising to the challenges and maximising and spreading their income streams, looking for new ways to use the skills learned in her little 'lifestyle' website and applying them to create genuine choice and opportunity. Are YOU either facing completely unexpected insecurities, or simply determined that you will never again have all your financial eggs in one basket? Or be completely dependent for your family's income on a company or board of directors over whose actions you have no control or input? If you are, then creating and marketing your own website - using things you already know about - might be a way forward for you. It's not going to make you rich overnight, or pay a direct hourly return like a 'j-o-b' type activity - for that reason it's very much best to start it before you are forced to /feeling the pinch. But if you have enthusiasm and ideas about anything at all, someone will be willing to learn about it from you, and if you have the right tools and education you can build a website to share it with the world for a profit.
