------------------ ARTICLE START ------------------

The African group D has spiced up with group favorites Ghana setting the early
pace with all the three teams still in contention for a place in South Africa
2010 finals. Ghana has made the brightest start in the group with winning their
first home fixture of the qualifiers against second placed Benin. They then
outplayed Sevilla's Kanoute led Mali by a 2-0 margin. Sudan on the other hand
have all to play for when they play the strongest team in the group as they
have solitary point to show for their efforts in the two matches they have
played in their campaign. They did well when they held a good Mali side at home
to get a valuable point but looked lackluster when they came against Benin in
an away game.

The former four time CAF African champions qualified for the World cup in
Germany in the last edition for the first time in history and had a dream
start when they beat highly fancied Czech Republic and USA before the were
eliminated by a star studded Brazil in the second round. The former two time
under 17 FIFA World cup champions had been in good form off late when as host
they were beaten in the semi finals of the continental cup last year owing
largely to injuries and suspension.

Sudan has been one of the founders of the Confederation of African Football and
has a rich history of football. They have been among the earliest FIFA members
representing Africa. They were the third nation from Africa to enter FIFA World
Cup preliminaries but are yet to make it to the finals of the World cup. The
Sukoor Al-Jediane would though be confident with their strong showings in the
recent past noticeably their encouraging showing at the last year's Ghana 2008.

With six crucial points at stake in the round of double header at the mid way
stage of the qualifiers and with only two round of matches to be played in the
qualifiers, favorable results in these two matches can well give a decisive
edge to the teams. Ghana has plenty to choose from with the likes of Chelsea
number 5 Michael Essien leading the midfield. Sulley Muntari is another fast
improving midfielder. The Black Stars have Manuel Agogo, Tagoe and Amoah to
score and not to forget the Michael Essien's usual thunderbolts from outside
the penalty area.

Sudan on the other hand has some good players who can win matches on their own.
They do not possess the likes of Essiens but rely on team work and
coordination. The Sukoor Al-Jediane has in the camp the likes of Faisal Agab
with Muhammad Tahir and Haytam Kamal also providing a helpful hand. As history
has shown, Football results are difficult to predict.
