More and more brides and grooms are looking for ways to save money on their
weddings. The average amount couples spend on weddings today is $15,000, down
$3,000 from last year. It's no surprise that people are looking for ways to
spend less money on weddings. Expenses can be cut on everything from diamond
engagement rings to guest lists or the reception.

Here are some ideas for saving money on your wedding:

1. Cut back on the guest list.

You do not need to invite every old friend from high school. If you haven't
talked to someone in more than five years, why would you even consider inviting
them to your wedding? Most people don't want to go to weddings anyway. It's
just another expense.

So don't invite all of your friends' parents or your great aunts and uncles you
have never met. Don't invite your neighbors or your coworkers just because they
know you're getting married. Trust me, they don't want to get you a gift
anyway. Save them the trouble.
Make your initial list, but then start cutting. And don't ask your fiance to
cut out all of his guests. You both have to do some cutting.

Try to keep it at 200 guests.

2. Make your own wedding invitations.

You don't have to do anything fancy with the invitations. You could even do
your invitations digitally and send out an email to all your guests. Be careful
because some of your older relatives may not use email and guests might have a
tendency to forward the email on to others who are not invited.

You do not have to go over the top with your invitations.

3. Serve a cheaper meal.

Serve a meatless dinner. Or just to a salad bar or appetizers. You will save a
lot of money if you are serving a fancy salad instead of steak or seafood.

4. Use artificial flowers.

They're cheaper and often just as pretty or better. You will also save yourself
some stress because the flowers will not wilt before your eyes and you won't
have to worry about dirt or water spilling everywhere.

5. Don't have an open bar.

Perhaps everyone gets a free glass of champagne or a free beer. But after that,
let your guests buy their own beverages. Offer free soda. Some of your guests
are not going to be thrilled that they have to buy their own drinks but that's
tough. It's your wedding.

6. Select a few pieces of luxury jewelry.

You do not need to be all decked out in diamonds. A simple diamond necklace or
some bracelets can be subtle and beautiful. You can wear high end jewelry
without going overboard. Look in your jewelry box. You probably have plenty of
jewelry that will go with your wedding dress.

7. Serve cupcakes.

They are less expensive than a large, decorative cake.

8. Hire friends or family members.

You probably know someone who is a good photographer. Or maybe you have a
friend who does catering. When you really think about it, you can probably hire
out people you know to do a lot of the work. You will still want to pay these
people, but it will probably be less expensive and at the same time, it will
have more meaning to you.

Saving money at a wedding really comes down to all the details in planning.
Nothing needs to be over the top. And just because you are spending less
doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your style. Even if you save money on your
diamond engagement, you can always upgrade the ring later on.
