Is that dripping tap driving you nuts and wasting water? Old pipes squeaking away every morning while you shower? Sounds like you need a good plumber. While there are hundreds of plumbers operating in and around Sydney, finding a good one is harder than you may think. There are dozens of shady operators out there, they kind of tradesman who will spot a sucker a mile off and charge them a bomb for a simple job. There are two ways to avoid this happening to you. The first is to get small problems sorted out straight away, so you are not in a situation where you are forced to hire the only plumber who will return your call on a Friday night when your pipe has burst. The second is to do your homework, know the signs of a good plumber so you will know how to spot one when you need one. Rely on word of mouth from friends and family. If they tell you to avoid a certain plumber, trust them. Likewise, if they mention someone is good ask for their number. Professionals who deal with tradespeople on a regular basis, such as Real Estate Agents or Builders may also be able to point you in the right direction, but keep in mind they may be getting a referral fee. If you don't have anyone to refer you to a plumber then your next best bet is some internet research. Check out websites of plumbers in the area. You may even find a forum or review website which offers information in the local area. You can learn a lot from a plumber in a quick conversation with them. Don't expect them to answer the phone straight away, a good plumber is a busy plumber. Do expect a call back that day though. Pay attention to their phone manner; are they happy to chat and explain things to you or do they seemed rushed and simply want to start the job? A good plumber should be willing to take five minutes out of their day for a quick discussion with you. If you have a particularly large job, you will most likely be asking a few plumbers to quote on the job for you. In fact, the only time you wouldn't do this is if perhaps it was an emergency call out. Observe again, the plumbers attitude toward you. Note their respect of your property, do they take their shoes off at the door? Are they courteous to you and your family? These things may seem like they are not related to a plumbers professional ability, but a persons attitude is often a reflection of their professional attitude. Don't be afraid to ask for a few referrals from the plumber. Ask for recent clients who have either provided a written testimonial or are happy to speak to you over the phone. While not as reliable as a referral from a friend, it can still give a good indication of a plumbers skill and reliability.
