Have you considered buying pet insurance? You may have thought about it if your
pup's vet bills have seemed high. And chances are if you've taken your dog to
the vet lately, you did not get out of there for under $50.

For the right pets, pet insurance will cover the majority of vet bills that pet
will have during a given year. Buying coverage for your small dog might be
worth it more than a large dog because smaller dogs live so much longer and end
up costing more over time.

Pet insurance for big dogs might be a good idea too, depending on the dog. Many
large breeds are prone to certain health issues such as hip displaysia, cancer
or allergies.

Many people ask the question, is pet insurance worth it? Unfortunately there is
no right answer to that question. It just depends on each individual dog and
each individual owner's financial situation.

Pet insurance is nice to have if you know you would not be able to afford your
pet's vet bills in an emergency.

Ask yourself this: What would you do if Rover had a serious injury or accident?
Would you be able to pay for his medical needs?

What if your dog got really sick and required weeks of treatment? Would you be
able to cover this care on your own or would you need some assistance?

It's hard to think about, but what would you end up doing if you could not pay
your dog's vet bills?

Would you have to find your dog a new home? Would you have to ask family
members for money? Would you put your dog down? Would you put it on credit
cards?

Most pet insurance companies offer you a limit per year that is more than you
would ever spend on your pet. Some policies cover routine visits. Other
policies only cover emergencies and long-term illnesses, so do your research
and find the best plan and company.

Another thing to consider is your dog's age. Most companies will not insure a
dog once it is past a certain age (usually 7 or 8), unless that pet has been
insured since it was a puppy. So if you think you will be able to buy insurance
for your dog once she reaches her "senior" years, think again.

The best thing to do is call a few companies and ask about their coverage. Get
a quote from several companies before deciding on the best one or even getting
insurance at all.

If you have smaller pets like cats or exotic animals, they can be covered under
a plan, too. Most will cover cats and dogs, but it is harder to find coverage
for reptiles, ferrets, bunnies, gerbils and so forth.

VPI pet insurance has policies available for almost any exotic pet. It even has
extensive coverage for different kinds of birds.

It's up to you whether or not to buy pet insurance, but you don't want to be
without funding for your pet's medical bills. Plan ahead so you don't have to
make fast decisions later on.
