That burning, stinging feeling when you have a urinary tract infection doesn't
always mean you have to make an appointment to see your doctor for a course of
antibiotics. There are a few easy-to-use remedies that don't cost a fortune
that you can try first.

Urinary alkalizer formulas are helpful and while they don't always work to
clear the bacteria may still be useful. They are usually available to buy as
sachets of powder that you can add to a glass of water. The more water the
better so make it a big glass and as often as possible according to
instructions. Urinary alkalizers work by raising the pH of the urine which has
a soothing effect that helps relieve the stinging or burning sensation. The
alkaline pH helps to provide an environment that prevents the bacteria from
multiplying. Taken early enough this remedy may be all you need to clear the
infection.

Urinary alkalizers are best at the very first sign of an infection. Sometimes
you will beat the infection with them and that will be the end of the matter
but they are not the most reliable treatment. Cranberry capsules are a good
natural treatment for UTIs as they help prevent the bacteria from adhering to
the walls of the urinary tract. One innovative New Zealand company has cleverly
combined a urinary alkalizer with cranberry in the form of an effervescent
tablet that you drop into a glass of water. It works quicker and is more
effective than regular alkalizer formulas.

The most effective natural treatment for urinary tract infections is the sugar,
D-Mannose. This natural powder is safe for children, the elderly and even
pregnant women. D-Mannose is found naturally in a number of fruits such as
peaches and cranberry and also in the bark of certain trees such as Birch. What
makes it so special is that it prevents E. coli bacteria from sticking to the
walls of the urinary tract.

E. coli is the organism responsible for more than 90% of urinary tract
infections. This bacteria adheres to the urinary tract wall using sticky finger
like projections. Once attached to the lining of the urinary tract the bacteria
are able to reproduce quickly. One becomes two and two becomes four and so on
until you have thousands infecting and causing misery. The good news is that E.
coli when exposed to D-Mannose in the urine would rather attach to this special
sugar in preference to the urinary tract wall. The bacteria are then flushed
out with the urine and the infection is safely and effectively treated.

Using D-Mannose is easy. Simply stir half a teaspoonful of powder into a big
glass of water and drink every two hours during an acute infection. Symptoms
usually clear completely in 24-48 hours. If not completely clear in 48 hours
see your doctor as the infection is not likely to be caused by E. coli. Mild
infections usually clear much quicker than 48 hours. Sometimes one or two doses
is all that is needed for a mild infection.

For those that have recurrent infections D-Mannose is the discovery of the
century. Treatment for prevention differs from person to person which is why it
is best to experiment to find out the optimal frequency of dosing for the
individual that keeps infections at bay. For some this may mean one to three
doses a day while others may only need a dose every two or three days to keep
their urinary tract clear. D-Mannose may also be combined with urinary tract
alkalizers safely with the benefit of reduced stinging and burning while the
bacteria are being removed.
