One of the most frequent ways people end up gaining weight is because of their tendency to drink their calories. To be exact, the beverage they enjoy is full of calories. Now, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with drinking calories. Many healthy drinks are full of calories because of their (helpful) natural sugar content. For instance, orange juice and apple juice provide a number of healthy and useful nutrients to the body. However, if you are trying to lose weight, you must be aware that each glass comes with around 100 calories. Plus, those calories do add up and turn into stored fat when they are not consumed. Eating on Top of Drinking A main problem with drinking calories is that liquids generally do not make you feel full. Specifically, if you are hungry and eat an orange, the pulp of the orange (being fiber) will fill up your stomach. That will curb hunger. Why shouldn't it? It is food and you have eaten it! On the other hand, when you drink orange juice, you get all the calories of the orange but not the pulp. In the end, you will still be hungry after drinking orange juice. Therefore, when you do eat something you will add the calories of the food on top of the calories of the liquid. Now, the 90 or so calories you ingest from the glass of orange juice is nominally small. (Well, it is per glass. If you drink a half dozen of them....) However, there are quite a few healthy drinks out there that deliver a great many vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants; but, they also come with 300 calories per glass. Obviously, these drinks will pack on a significant amount of weight in a very short period of time. Bear in mind we are only discussing healthy drinks here. If you choose to drink sugary beverages or alcohol, the calories you acquire will be significant. Plus, worst of all, there will be no nutritional value with the drinks. Controlling Liquid Calories Instead of drinking beverages loaded with calories, it seems a wiser option to drink liquids that have no calories. In all probability, the best drink for this would be water. Water has zero calories and it also provides the added benefit of flushing the kidneys and liver. This will lead to the improvement in the metabolism which will, consequently, burn more fat. If you are not a fan of drinking water, diet soda remains a useful alternative. True, diet soda is not the best beverage from a healthy point of view. However, it is certainly a better option that drinking regular soda and it will not yield the fat gain sugary beverages provide. It might take some time to get used to no-calorie drinks. Certainly understandable because the body always needs a little time to get used to something new. Eventually, your taste will become accommodated to no-calorie drinks and your body will reap the positive benefits. Is that not what you really wanted to start with?
