One of the most important aspects of starting a home business is being able to
manage your time well. Time management skills are vital to any business and
they are even more important when you are your own boss. There aren't any
external pressures on you to make sure that you get tasks done when you should.

When you choose to work at home, you do so because you want to have some
freedom over how you spend your time. However, if you don't get your time
management skills under control you're going to end up spending all of your
time working instead of enjoying a balance between your work life and your
personal life. If you're considering starting your own business or you already
work at home, you need the following tips to help you manage your time better.

1. Identify important tasks and get them done first
It is very easy to get distracted while working at home and especially when
working online. There are many tasks, like checking e-mail, that seem to be
important when they actually aren't. Although reading blogs, staying on top of
the news and checking the weather may seem like important tasks at the time,
they can result in a huge loss of time.

There is a big difference between important work related tasks and tasks that
seem urgent. If you spend all day taking care of urgent unimportant tasks, you
won't get any quality work done. At the beginning of your work day, identify
which tasks are the most important and get them done first.

2. Set time limits for yourself
Just because you can work odd hours on your work at home business doesn't meant
that you should. If you don't set clear time limits for yourself, you'll find
that your tasks will grow to meet whatever time that you have. For example, if
you sit down to work on your website and don't set a clear end time, you'll
find yourself easily distracted. What should have taken an hour or so ends up
taking two or three hours.

When you start a task, you need to give yourself a realistic time limit. Don't
try to get things done at super human speed. Just give yourself a reasonable
deadline and try to stick with it. You'll find that you'll waste less time this
way.

3.Get into a good routine.
Having a flexible schedule is one of the perks of working for yourself, but
there is danger in having too much flexibility. When you let your schedule "go
with the flow" everyday, it will be hard to stay on task and get things
accomplished. Although you don't necessarily have to put a rigid schedule into
place, you should have a general idea of how long your business tasks will take
and when you will get them done. When you follow the same routine each day,
you'll find that your work is much easier to accomplish.
