An ornamental iron fence opens up the view to your well-manicured lawn and
gardens. Not only a thing of beauty, it also provides a sense of safety and
security. Knowledgeable homeowners use ornamental iron fences along their
property lines, lining a driveway, around a custom swimming pool or as part of
a deck design.

Beauty and purpose blend wonderfully within an ornamental iron fence. It is a
remarkable focal point, something that is especially important when it comes
time to sell your home and you want to distinguish your property from all the
others in your price range. It is decorative sophistication at its best, a
subtle yet strong mark of distinction.

At the same time that it reveals substance, an ornamental iron fence also
provides utility. It keeps out intruders, protects your family and gives you
peace of mind. Additionally, it creates long-lasting appeal and increases your
property value.

If you are considering a wrought iron fence, one idea for the fence is to use
ornamental iron in combination with other materials. You can find beautiful
fences in which wrought iron is used with stone, brick and wood. With these
combination fences, the sky is the limit when it comes to design possibilities.

One example is wrought iron pickets with stone columns or masonry pillars.
Another example is to use a stretch of wrought iron to open onto, say, a view
of a greenbelt and then a wooden privacy fence on the side of your property
with neighbors. Castings, such as picket points, can further enhance the look.

Other ideas for ornamental iron within your landscape design include garden
fences, stair railings, handicap rails, balcony railings, window screens,
wrought iron garden gates and wrought iron wall elements.

Another design angle to consider is that ornamental iron can be customized in a
variety of colors, finishes, shapes and styles. Perhaps you have a particular
color shade in mind that will complement your home or maybe you saw a design
you really liked during your travels.

One negative that people assume about ornamental iron is that its upkeep is
relentless and expensive. While this belief is correct about true wrought iron,
most modern landscaping products that are called ornamental iron or wrought
iron are actually made of a lighter-weight steel and it does not rust like true
wrought iron.

Plus this modern fencing metal can be galvanized and powder coated to produce a
chemically bonded finish that makes it competitive with aluminum in the
durability category. Thus, today's wrought iron fences give you the desired
look of iron without the maintenance fuss and bother.

In any event, it is a good idea to use a professional landscaper who provides a
turn-key maintenance contract that includes the upkeep of the fence and gates.
A complete contract would cover general upkeep of the fence and gates,
including painting. You can also arrange for the contract to cover tending to
electrical or technical problems with motorized wrought iron driveway gates,
which is a smart use of time and resources for the busy executive family.
