Meet Jennifer. Jennifer is a 35 year old woman with a good job a nice place to
call home a partner who loves her. She is now at that stage in her life when
she feels a sense of urgency regarding the growth of her family. She is a
fictional concatenation of the typical women coming to our office for hypnosis.

Making babies takes on an entirely new meaning when you approach the subject
the way Jennifer did. She started her "baby project" in the usual and pragmatic
way, concentrating on sperm, eggs, hormones and ovulation time to get pregnant.
It seemed to her that if all the factors were in place, the end result, a baby,
would be the logical outcome.

Jennifer had done all her homework. She ate the right foods, took her
temperature every morning, and reminded her partner to make it home on time
when it was the night for their "homework". And then she waited; two weeks that
seemed like an eternity filled with hope, worry, stress and anxiety only to
find disappointment at the end of the road.

Four years of timing and "homework" had turned into a chore. The worry and lack
of spontaneity turned their 'special time" into a duty.

"There must be another piece to this puzzle" she said to herself, as she took
another glance at her temperature chart. And as she poured herself another
glass of water, she realized that she wasn"t simply a machine, but that she was
missing another piece, a less visible one. She was looking for some way to
assist her fertility from within herself.

She looked for help on the internet and came across an article about hypnosis
for fertility. The more she read the more she understood, "this seems fit the
answers I'm looking for."

Being more intimate with her fertility and being more connected to her
reproductive process appealed to her on different levels. Jennifer went to a
local HypnoFertility Certified Practitioner (HfCP).

In only 4 sessions she was clear-headed, empowered and she had a renewed trust
in her ability to conceive a baby; knowing that the miracle she was hoping for
would come into her life soon and, possibly just as importantly, when it was
ready". The connection between her now calmer mind and body had been
reinforced.

She was able to maintain a schedule of relaxation and visualization, twice a
week before bed for a few weeks until her miracle was ready. Less than a year
later, Jennifer and her husband welcomed their new baby into the world.

Hypnosis for fertility is becoming more and more popular. Thousands of women in
the United States and Canada are using "HypnoFertility" as a means to assist
their own fertility in ways never before attempted. And they have the success
stories to make the hardest of hearts smile. In ways, not yet fully understood,
women are attributing hypnosis to increasing their chances of conception
leading to term.

Now, especially when combining hypnosis with IVF or IUI, women are literally
doubling their success rates, alleviating disappointments of repeat cycles and
stress.

Research and clinical trials have shown that the process of conception can be
influenced by the mind. The Journal of American Medical Womens Association
(AMWA) sites that women, with depression symptoms after a failed first IVF,
when treated, showed a 60% viable pregnancy rate within six months, contrasting
with 24% when left untreated.

Indeed, for IVF assisted pregnancies, a similar study conducted 1993 confirms a
doubling of success rates in successive IVF cycles when the first IVF cycle has
failed and when resulting secondary depression symptoms were treated before
starting subsequent cycles.

The chances of conceiving doubles when hypnosis is added as a complement to
IVF. Professor Eliahu Levitas and his team conducted a study with 185 women
undergoing IVF in the Soroka hospital in Beersheva, Israel. While 14% of the
women in the control group conceived, 28% of the women who had been hypnotized
conceived as a result of the single treatment.

It seems that not only the calming effect of hypnosis relieves situational
stress related to unfamiliar surroundings and privacy related uneasiness during
the procedures themselves, but the technique of visualizing a healthy process
inside the woman's own body may be able to guide and enhance her body's ability
to complete the conception process in very real, and sometimes even magical,
ways.

Modern hypnosis includes techniques to bring about internal body changes
through what is now known as the Mind-body connection, the neuroendocrine
system.

The use of these techniques is not new, in fact, documented history goes back
as far as the early 1800's but its abilities to influence the body has always
been in question until the research by Roger Guillemin and Andrew Schally
showed this very connection. In 1977 they received a Nobel prize for their work
leading to this discovery.

It's very difficult to prove at what level the mind-metaphors actually connect
and ultimately alter bodily states, but time and time again hypnosis is quoted
as a catalyst in change manifested through thought.

Participation of the client is a prerequisite to hypnotic change. Ernest Rossi
PhD and Kathryn Rossi PhD both decorated Psychologist both pioneers in
Mind-Body Connection Research, use hypnosis to study this subject in detail.
They have learned how the Mind-body connection works within the brain and teach
hypnotists how to apply techniques to affect change. The changes that are
useful in working with fertility concentrate on creating a balance within the
body. The desired changes are directly influenced by hypnotic suggestion.

Possibly a familiar use of this Mind-Body connection is used by stage
hypnotists when they suggest to a volunteer that the temperature is becoming
unbearably cold causing them to show signs of cold, such as shivering, followed
by suggestions to cause the volunteer to feel hot (so that they remove articles
of clothing).

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis, that is to say that the hypnotist doesn't (and
can't) force the subject (client) to participate in the process. Without the
participation of the clients mind and belief-system, Mind-body hypnosis is
unsuccessful. The client allows the hypnotist to guide them through a series of
progressive techniques that allow the client's subconscious to become receptive
to suggestions provided through metaphoric imagery.

All the hypnotist "does" is guide the client to (and through) a state of
consciousness where the subconscious mind becomes receptive to suggestion.
Often the client doesn't even "feel hypnotized" as the conscious mind remains
active during the process.

Assisting women create their own results can be very rewarding. Overcoming
mental blocks and truly believing in their own ability to create their baby is
often the key to bring about a successful outcome. No two cases are alike, and
the ultimate solution is often achieved in 4 to 6 sessions.

In this work, hypnotists often work closely with other practitioners such as
naturopathic doctors, fertility clinics as well as traditional Chinese
medicine, acupuncturists and homeopathic doctors to achieve pregnancies, either
through natural conception or through assisted methods such as IVF or IUI.

Hypnosis for fertility not only addresses issues unique to fertility that can
relieve the mind-based obstructions that may hinder successful pregnancy.
Hypnosis for pregnancy may facilitate the early bonding experience with the
unborn baby.

It is well known that children are influenced by their surroundings well before
they're born and providing an inviting environment early in their lives is
believed to imprint a sense of belonging (to the family unit) which could be
attributed to better development of self-esteem in pre-teens and teens.
Hypnosis for childbirth continues this natural progression to facilitate
natural and comfortable birthing for uncomplicated pregnancies.

The success of hypnosis for fertility is not just measured in babies. Of course
it seems that way, and often a baby is the product of many factors including
hypnosis. The very first objective is to work with the client to restore a
sense of balance in her life.

The fertility specific work focuses on lowering stress levels and "hitting the
reset button" to be able to move forward in a positive way. This is true for
their partners also; dealing with fertility related issues often focuses on the
mother in the relationship, sometimes leaving the partner without adequate
support they need to fall back on.

Males, in couples who had trouble conceiving, showed lower sperm quality (count
and motility) when re-tested after a year of "trying to conceive". Several
studies show how stress influences sperm quality and in some studies "Timed
Intercourse" is mentioned as a major contributing factor in stress related
anejaculation (inability to ejaculate). Male partners will also benefit from
creating moments of calm and inner peace during stressful times.

As we gain more insight into the mechanics of fertility, we may be losing sight
of the fact that there is still a magical component to consider. There are
miracle elements to conception that seem reluctant to reveal their secrets to
us through science.

Hypnosis for fertility may hold a key to connecting with your internal
peace-of-mind and help you regain your own, individual balance.
