Although it is not very expensive to start a pet-related business, there are
some expenses involved. Here is an outline of what is needed to start a pet
business, and how much it will cost.

There are many different kinds of pet business. Some examples include dog
walking, dog running, in-home pet sitting, dog daycare, dog boarding, dog
photography, dog training and dog grooming.

If you are looking at how to start a dog walking business or a pet sitting
business, all you will really need is some advertising money.

It does not cost a lot to advertise a dog walking service. A newspaper ad will
likely cost about $100-$200 per month in the classified section. A magazine ad
will be much more expensive.

But these traditional ways of advertising are not the most effective and may
not even be necessary.

Other, possibly more effective advertising includes fliers, brochures and
Craigslist. For $100 or less, printing stores can print hundreds or even
thousands of fliers or brochures. To have someone design one might cost another
$100.

Printing from home makes sense for a lot of people, but keep in mind that ink
usually costs about $30 per cartridge and a good printer is well over $100.

And no matter what kind of pet-related business someone is starting, business
cards and a web site are a must.

Designers will charge anything from a small fee to thousands to design web
sites. Business cards are much cheaper or you can even make them yourself. Both
are necessary.

Advertising on Craigslist doesn't cost anything, and more and more people are
using the site to find specific services. Just be careful not to post too often
or your posts will be marked as spam.

Other things not related to advertising a dog walking business include quality
walking or running shoes ($125) and some extra leashes ($5-$20 each). It is
also handy to have an extra Gentle Leader ($20) or choke collar ($10) on hand
in case a dog is difficult to control.

Other items a dog walker should have on hand include towels or wipes for muddy
paws ($20 or so), a notebook for leaving messages for owners and probably a
vehicle for getting from place to place. Depending on where you live, a bike
might work just fine.

Someone interested in starting a dog training business will not need very much
start-up cash either - just experience, references and patience. It takes a
long time to gain enough customers for a full-time business.

Starting part time and slowly growing to full time is not a bad idea for most
small businesses.

Other pet businesses may cost a bit more, but are still less money to start up
than the average business. For example, a grooming business will need all the
grooming equipment, shampoos and tables and bathtubs, etc.

A dog daycare will need a secure, fun place for the dogs to stay. A pet
photographer will need the right camera.

If you are starting a pet-related business, good luck to you!
