There are two types of plastic water pipes out there to choose from, cast iron
pipes and plastic water pipes. Plastic water pipes are sometimes used in lawn
sprinkler systems, and have slowly begun to replace the more traditional cast
iron ones as they are less expensive. They are also easier to install and can
remove waste more easily as well.

Some building departments prohibit using plastic water pipes in houses,
however, as there can be some negative ramifications. Therefore, city and
county laws surrounding the installation of plastic water pipes are often much
lengthier and stricter. The reasoning behind doing so is that plastic pipes
can produce toxic fumes. In the event of a fire, these fumes could be very
harmful.

Even if your building department allows plastic water piping inside the home,
another consideration when determining whether to install plastic pipes is that
some studies have shown them to change the odor and taste of drinking water.
Perhaps even more important than the different taste or smell that comes from
plastic pipes is that these tastes or smells could be occurring because of
chemicals being leached into the water.

Not only will you need your building departments approval for plastic piping in
your home, you will also need to adhere to specific requirements for installing
the pipes. You have to include access points to the pipes in your flooring and
walls.

They require this because in the past, plastic piping has sometimes come apart
at certain points when faced with high pressure water. Access needs to be
readily available to the pipes in order to circumvent and treat this problem
should it occur.

Plastic pipes vary widely. Certain pipes are built for much higher
temperatures of water, whereas others are specifically made to withstand higher
pressure. For example, the pipe that runs between a shower fixture and the hot
water heater has to be built to withstand high pressure.

There are two different types of plastic tubes that can take high pressure hot
water, and those are rigid CPVCs and flexible PBs. They can be used together
or separate to form a non-electrolytic water system for homes.

However, plastic pipes cannot be used for electrical grounding as they are non
conducting. For cold water situations, such as outdoor garden irrigation
systems and watering the lawn, the ideal type of plastic pipe to be used is the
PVC pressure pipe. Another type of pipe, the PE pipe, works well for deep
wells since it is flexible.

Though there are certain requirements and regulations to adhere to when putting
plastic piping in your home, the cost-effectiveness and ease of installation
make it an attractive option for many homeowners nonetheless.
