When you look out of your head into the world, you are looking through several
filters that have been put into place by evolution to make it easier for you.
There are many filters in nature, and man made. Here we will explore some of
them and how changing them can help you.

Some filters are used by those old guys that were looking for gold during the
California gold rush. They picked up a bunch of sludge, and filtered the dirt
out, and hopefully there would be some gold leftover. An oil filter on your car
is another example. It keeps the dirt and pieces of metal out of your engine,
making it last longer.

There are filters in your mind as well. They are there to keep your brain free
of processor power, so you aren't constantly going through the trial and error
process every time you see something. When you see a car, your mind sorts it
through all its filters to determine exactly what it is and what it is used for.

Some filters are completely out of our conscious awareness. One way to do a
quick check of the filters that are operating in your head is to simply do a
quick inventory of your life. What things do you have? What things are you
experiencing on a daily basis? Whatever you have going in your life is a result
of your filters. The people, jobs, living conditions, cars, everything you have
is a result of a filter of some sort.

Many of our filters were learned from others. Teachers, parents, sports heroes,
other adults. We learned them growing up without really stopping to question
whether they were useful or not. What happens when you come across a filter
that isn't too useful?

So how do you go about changing your filters? Practice filtering on a conscious
basis. Just like any skill, when you elevate it to the conscious level, you can
change it, and drop it back down to the subconscious level where you won't have
to think about it.

Take your golf swing for example, or any other sports related skill. Unless you
have taken lessons, or focused on a specific component of it, you likely
learned through trial and error. You kept changing your method without much
thought, until you got a result that was acceptable to you.

Taking lessons is a great example of this. You get an outside, objective
authority who can tell you exactly what you are doing wrong, and how to correct
it. Move your grip, change your stance, take a deep breath, all these things we
don't usually think about, but by examining them consciously, we can improve on
them, and let them drop back into unconsciousness.

When you have a filter you'd like to change, you can do the same thing. Bring
it up into conscious awareness, change it, and let it drop back down into auto
pilot. Before you enter into an environment, make a clear decision what you
want to get out of it before you enter, and then sort only for those things
that will get you what you want.

For example, next time you go outside for walk, choose what you want to look
for before you leave the house. Try sorting for people that can hold eye
contact, and see how many smiles you can mentally collect. Or sort for people
with dogs, and look only for them. Don't spend time looking at other things, or
letting your mind wander. Remember, this is practice, just like in tennis or
bowling.

Your unconscious mind is filtering like this anyway. The times when you feel
unsure anxious about making a choice, you either have not decided what is
important, or you have some conflicts.

When you make a clear and solid choice exactly what you want before you enter
into any situation, you are practicing selecting conscious filters. Another way
to practice filtering is go outside for a walk, and see how many red things you
can mentally collect.

Most people never take the time to examine their filters and see if they are
working for them. They have such vague filters that they end up in
relationships that don't serve them, jobs they don't like, and life situations
that are less than spectacular. By practicing your filtering on a conscious
level, you will become more and more skilled.

And the more you practice, the more detailed you can get in your filtering.
You'll be amazed how well this works. Instead of filtering for red things,
you'll be filtering for jobs that pay you good money to do exactly what you
want, or life partners that can satisfy you sexually and emotionally in ways
you never thought possible. You'll never again have to "end up" with anything.
You can actually choose your life.
