There are many reasons to bike with your dog, although some may be less obvious
than others. Here are a few reasons why biking with your dog is healthy for
both the dog and the owner.

1. It helps with weight loss.

That's true for the dog and the owner! So many pets are overweight these days.
And their owners are too. If the dog needs a little extra exercise, then the
owner probably could use some more exercise and some motivation as well.

There are a lot of overweight pets out there, but there are also plenty of
overweight people who own these pets!

Trying something a little more fun and exciting than the usual walking routine
will be nice for the human and the dog. A hands free bike leash makes biking a
little safer because the owner can have both hands on the bike.

2. It gives the dog a job.

Dogs need a purpose or they become bored and stir crazy. My mutt wears a
backpack, he does dog agility, he retrieves and he goes biking. Biking is one
of the easiest ways to give him a job to do.

When I bike with my dog, he is very focused and relaxed. He has to pay
attention to me and where I'm going. He does not pull or go after other dogs
because he is more concerned about his "job."

3. It's good cross training for the person.

Walking every day can be hard on the knees and ankles. Biking works different
muscles. This won't be the case for the dog, because the dog will be walking or
running regardless.

Because of this, owners should make sure not to bike too fast with their dogs.
Remember that the dog has to work a lot harder just to keep up.

For people using a bike leash for dogs, it's important to remember to look at
the dog every now and then and see how she's doing. When someone is not holding
a leash, it's easy to forget about the dog!

4. Cover more ground.

Dogs love to migrate with their pack, and that means their owner. It's boring
to cover the same 2-mile stretch day after day. With a bike, the dog gets to
explore new areas further out from her front door. This is also a nice break
from the routine for the person.

5. Biking will tire out the dog.

Walking is just not enough to tire out some of the most high-energy dogs such
as border collies, boxers and springer spaniels. But biking with them will
really work. A tired dog is less likely to be bored and cause problems such as
barking, aggression and destruction indoors.

6. Biking will increase the human and dog bond.

Biking with a dog is another excuse for training. The more training that takes
place, the more respect the dog will have for her owner. This sets up a good
relationship for further training and being able to take the dog more places.
