Whether your business is growing and you have a need to get networked or
looking to upgrade your current network servers you will no doubt be looking at
what type of server you need. IT infrastructure is worth getting right. It is
an important decision to make considering that 80% of companies go out of
business once they have had a major server outage. Network servers also need to
be replaced every 4-5 years so bear that in mind when you are making your
purchasing decision.

Network Servers have become essential to everyday operations of a business. To
choose the right server you simply use the same formula you would use for
choosing anything else. Write down what your needs are and look for the
equipment that will service that need. It does get a little more complex from
there of course.

Not just any network server will do the trick. Some are better at certain tasks
than others, while there are servers that do not have upgrade options.
Choosing a network server to fit your needs mainly depends on what your needs
are. As mentioned above, some servers are better than others at different
tasks. Some servers specialize in large amounts of connections to your
network. These tend to be ideal for web hosting companies or businesses with
large needs.

Then there are those network servers that work better transferring large
amounts of data and or media files such as video clips and pictures. These tend
to be better options for media, graphic design and such businesses. Your
business may simply need a basic file server to keep track of your database.
File servers will often be very similar to a desktop pc in size and layout. You
can install better CPUs, memory, and hard drives like you would any other
desktop and are easy to upgrade rather than replace all together.

Other considerations are the share speed at which new technology is evolving.
New models and processors come out every year and you may be seduced by the
latest fandangle equipment and find you do not use have of what you have paid
for. Investing in the most expensive equipment is not always sound strategy.

Though for heavy users and big companies this is probably the only option. A
longer term strategy is to invest in current generation model upgrade over the
years.

The most important thing to remember about network servers is that you do need
to replace them every 4-5 years to avoid complete loss of business. Factor this
into your long term financial forecasting when making your initial decisions.
Balance your budget, your needs, your future needs, and know there is no need
to overextend yourself. Never invest in second hand network servers. This can
mean a major disaster in the happening the time and money you spend in fixing
the problem will outweigh the money you think you have spent by going second
hand.
