The uniqueness of e-commerce website is that it offers more services to the
customers than a normal website. The main purpose of any website is to provide
information to the visitors. But e-commerce websites focus more on transforming
information seekers to potential buyers. We use the same designing tools to
build a website for any e-commerce websites. But the business strategy adopted
and scale of application is different from a normal website.

For any e-commerce websites, the objective is to influence the visitor to
make some online purchase. All design efforts should focus on bringing more
traffic to the website and increase product sales. Due to the commercial nature
of the website, all aspects and elements of design should focus on marketing
products. Successful e-commerce sites adopted effective online selling strategy
to sell the products and services to their customers. Easy navigation,
interactive layout and safe and secure payment system are important for any
e-commerce site to be successful.

The task of an e-commerce web designer is more challenging, since he has to
consider various business trends and marketing styles adopted by the
competitors, to create a powerful e-commerce site. The basic objectives of any
e-commerce website are to provide, a convenient place for shopping, a trusted
and secured site for users and easy to use applications.

Layout and design: Before designing an e-commerce website, the designer
should understand some behavior patterns of online visitors. The most common
behavior is that, online visitors do not have patience; they spend only little
time in any website.
If your website layout is not attractive for them at first instance, he may
land up in your competitors site.

The designer has to make sure that his layout is appealing to the large
number of visitors and it offers enough information to the users. The layout of
your site should be neat and user-friendly. Do not create a cluttered layout.
Make your layout simple and easily understandable. Too much of design will
actually confuse the user and he may not know what to do in your site.

Design your layout in such a way that it attracts the user. Your layout should
be comprehensive and provide the exact information, what the users are looking
for. Do not make them to search for it. Remember that visitors come to your
website in search of products; give them first what they want. This reduces
visitors valuable time and increases your website reputation.

Fonts and colors: Select some professional fonts. Choose colors that are not
irritating to the eyes. Artistic fonts and color pallets may show your design
capability. But if it is not going to attract the visitor, no one is going to
appreciate your design. Moreover, some font types are not supported by all
computers. Remember these practical difficulties in choosing the fonts. It is
safer to use only professional fonts to make your site agreeable to many users.

Colors say a lot about your e-commerce websites. Avoid some bright colors,
backgrounds and text effects. Make your color styles to glide with the website
theme and products.

Product portfolio: It is the key for a successful e-commerce website. The
product page should be designed more diligently than any pages in the website.
An ideal product page has the product image, description and product price.

Use thumbnail images for your product pages. This will speed up the load time
of your website. Make sure that your product page has the right mix of
information, images and links that visitors are looking for. Online users
depend on your product page to asses the particular product. The Product
description is the key element that induces the user to buy the product.

The basic elements of any product page should contain product overview,
detailed description, specific features of the product, high quality image,
availability, size, rate and customer ratings/user reviews. Any
guarantee/warrantee information is also important for a product page.

Shopping cart: selecting a shopping cart that fits to your specific needs is
crucial to your e-commerce website success. Online shopping carts are same as
the real shopping carts. But online shopping carts offer more features such as,
product list, check list, quantity, product description and price. Once the
customer reviews and agrees the items that he is going to buy. It redirects to
the check out system. The checkout process should be smooth and fast. If it is
going to consume lot of time and involves filling up of many forms, customer
may not be interested to make sales. Some times, it is unnecessary to ask for
too much of customer informations. It will irate the customer and discards the
entire shopping process. Always remember that your customer have many options.

Payment system: Convenient and secure payment system is essential for your
e-commerce success. Guide buyers to find the payment gateway easily in your
website. Provide different kinds of payment systems that are safe and secure to
operate. Give possible choice for customers to select the payment system that
is comfortable for him. Normally customers pay thru credit card, PayPal or
electronic funds transfer. The designer has to ensure that the payment
transaction is safe and secure to the customer. Add an SSL certificates 128 bit
encryption to secure all your payment transactions.
