Even if you're pensioned like many of my readers, you have solely narrow time
and energy for your drafting hobby. And if you're making art for your living
then time and energy will be actually more constricted and of value to you!

So you might be questioning yourself: what ought I center on when drafting? You
could work on improving your abilitiesor you could put time in eliminating your
weaknesses.

Quite a difficult question. It's crucial to think some time on the question
into what to invest your energy.

On the one side you could concentrate on your best skills. Let us say for
instance you're outstanding in sketching seamless and realistic looking
shadings. So you should put more of your attempts in further honing these
skills. Some more time will soon bring your skill-level from "great" to
"superb".

Then again you should put your energy in fixing your weaknesses. Let us assume
you need a lot more praxis in portraying perspective and proportions more
accurately. Putting effort you would better your skill in this area to at
least intermediate levels.

But wait! If you center only on compensating your weaknesses, you'll commit
many effort to change these weaknesses into only average skills. In the end
that implies you will end up with nearly only intermediate powers, the
consequence is only mediocrity.

You read there are both rewards and disfavors to both options be it building on
your powers or be it fighting your weaknesses.

A great deal of artists will convince you: forget your weaknesses and center
on your strengths. That's a great advice but as you will see only a fraction of
the truth.

So what to do?

Foremost it's important you know your weaknesses and you have to understand to
what extent your weaknesses harm your drawings. As illustration: If you are
creating many pencil pictures, weak skills in perspective and proportions will
impede you much more than absent abilities in the use of colours. Actually
these abilities are utterly worthless as long as you remain creating
black-and-white pencil sketchings.

And that's the crucial point: only forget these weaknesses that do not hinder
your drawing results and sketches. But put a good share of your time and energy
into those weaknesses that keep you from creating better creations and
sketches. Try fixing these weaknesses - and only these!

And so you'll have many energy left to try improving your existing skills even
further. And that's what you ought to do, too. If you comply to this strategy
you will have the best results possible for your efforts.

One last addition: these tips may look a little like those efficiency stuff
taught in management courses. And yes it's very similar. But it's not aiming
for pressing the last bubble of creativeness out of you and your time! It's
only for doing the right things in the right order to help you develop your
sketching skills most.

And of course please do not forget the fun part of sketching. So if you prefer
to try and practice new techniques because it's amusing then just do it! (and
do not ask yourself whether it may help you or not ...)
