It's critical never to guess how a hand should look like. Also the finest
creative persons look at the hand they're not using in front of them as a
example when they're sketching hands. Likewise you should find a pocket-sized
mirror and employ it to examine your hand from the front or to transform your
left hand into a right hand.

A often repeated novice's mistake is to depict the hands too small. You should
consider the proportions carefully when you draw a hand. As a guideline, place
your hand in front of your face. See how it goes all the way from the chin to
your hairline. Keep that in mind when drawing hands on or near faces in your
sketchings.

Once you're beginning to learn how to draw hands it is most effective to depict
a unstrained hand pose first. See how the fingers are not unbent when the hand
is unstrained. They always flex a little, the pinkie to a higher degree the
index finger.

1st analyze the proportions of your fingers. View your fingers with the palm
turned away. You'll note that the fingers are around half the size of the
entire hand. All fingers consists of three sections of dissimilar sizes. The
upper section (including the nail) is around two thirds of the midsection, and
the middle part is around two thirds of the lowest part (which ends at the
knuckles).

Now for some magic! Turn your hand all over so you view it from the palm side.
The proportions of the fingers have changed now dramatically! The fingers now
look foreshortened. If you measure them you'll discover they're much less than
one-half the length of the complete hand. The reason: the skin 'tween the
digits appears as element of the palm.

In addition to this observe that all three elements of the fingers in this
position are all of almost same length. When sketching hands it's really
important to keep in mind this so you do not make the mistake of sketching
identical fingers no matter which way you look at them.

The thumb is a completely distinct story, so do not draw it as some other
finger. It only has two joints, not three, points in a distinct direction and
has a completely distinct form so analyze it carefully. You must also notice
how it bends lightly when fully stretched out.

Drafting other hand postures

The succeeding basic hand postures you ought to practice to sketch is the
clenched fist. Note that the knuckles do not end up in a straight line and that
the index finger and frequently the middle digit stick out to a higher degree
the other digits.

As soon as you have mastered drafting relaxed hands and clenched fists, start
sketching hands that point somewhere or grab items. At last you can also
practice drafting hands that gesture.

Exercise these poses again and again using your own hand as a example. In just
a couple of weeks you will note a big advance in your skills and can begin
adding more hand postures to your repertoire.
