Hopefully, you have had a thrifty holiday season and did not over-do it on Valentine's Day. However, if you think you need to pick yourself up a quick $50, feel free to read on for some tips. 1. Do you use those convenience cleaner cloths? Any kind? Say, dryer softener cloths, face cleanser cloths, etc? Ask yourself if you really do need them? Did anyone really need them 100 years ago? Ok... so, the answer is "Yes" you need them. Then you should cut them in half! They will go twice as far. Say they cost you $10 per month. Cut in half they now cost $5. Savings = $5 per month 2. Do you need to buy little thoughtful gifts for you or your child's birthday and holiday parties? Well, do a little pre-planning and buy well in advance (i.e. Off Season). Or, even better make them! Savings = $10 per month 3. Bring your lunch to work one time per week instead of buying it (I love this one!). Ideally you could bring your lunch to work every day, or, even four days a week. But, even one time per week saves about $7. Savings $7 (eating out) x 4 (weeks) = $28 per month 4. Don't go to the local gourmet "coffee shop" (or any coffee shop for that matter) on weekends. Savings: 2 visits x $2 per coffee = $4 per week x 4 weeks = $16 per month 5. Instead of a family night out, consider having a picnic or in cold weather go sledding together, or exercising outside together (play tag!). You combine this with not renting or buying that movie (because you are playing Monopoly for 4 hours!) and you can save more than this but we'll go with $25. Savings = $25 per month 6. If you carry a balance on your credit card and are only able to afford paying the minimum monthly amount, pay the card in weekly installments instead of one monthly payment. So, say you owe $100 per month, pay $25 per week. Why, you may ask? Because credit card companies accrue interest daily on your balance, it makes sense to pay it quickly. By paying more per week you reduce the overall interest building for the credit card companies. Savings = $10 - $100 per month (maybe even more) 7. Use coupon codes online and for your local shopping needs. Most people discard the Sunday papers without saving and using the free coupons. This is a mistake as these coupons provide rich discounts. Also, you can find online coupon codes and savings promotions. 8. Start cooking and freezing. Figure out easy to freeze meals and spend a day cooking for the freezer. If you do this, you are able to purchase food in bulk and you will avoid throwing away food that would have otherwise spoiled. Savings = $25 - $50 per month 9. Watch TV? A Book Reader? Are you dissatisfied with what's available on TV? Consider getting rid of your cable! I know it sounds audacious. But, plenty of people are doing this and it can save you $50 per month on the TV portion (or more). At the very least consider cutting back on premium channels. If you are book reader, stop buying and start using your library card. This is a nice way to get to know your local librarian too! Savings = $5 - $50 per month 10. You drive? Use less expensive gasoline. There are numerous internet sites that post local gas prices. Better yet, get a bike if you are close to a town square. Finally, try and "group" together your needs and create one shopping day, rather than numerous trips.
