You might disagree, but hear me out on this when I say that in
coaching high school soccer, communication is the first step to
success. The art of communicating to the team is what coaching
truly is. It enables you to let people understand exactly what you
wish them to do and in what sense.

When it comes to soccer coaching, I've observed that most of the
coaches often are the ex-players. Still, there are several problems
that they have to find solutions to. These issues come up due to
the inability to communicate properly. As a coach, you need to
work upon certain communication related problems for effective
execution of your responsibilities.

I’ll explain them one by one.

Emotions of the coaches take over their minds while they are
watching their kids play on field. They tend to become spectators
rather than analytical observers. They tend to overlook some chief
points that could help the team improve on certain fronts. As such
they lose the focus on directing the team towards a win by way of
an effective conversation.

Though the coaches today are complete professionals fully
acquainted with the game, they lack communication training. For
instance; most coaches don’t use videos or flip charts in soccer
coaching because they don’t know about them. The coach may be
technically talented but if he not able to communicate properly,
regular practice sessions get really boring for the kids.

This occupies greater importance in coaching high school soccer as
the players are young but also know the various facets of the
game. They have been doing these soccer drills for some time but
at different levels. And one of the ways to avoid the boredom of
repeating important messages is to keep varying the format.

It may come as a surprise to you that coaches often forget that
their training sessions are carried out by people. They get so
absorbed in the training and coaching as a process that they lose
their ground. For example; Sending out instructions without taking
the player’s name leads to uncertainty and confusion.

There are certain guiding principles in football coaching which are
as follows:

Every message coming from the coach carries equal importance. So
it’s necessary that they are deduced correctly.

Your messages should have a positive impact on the players to put
their best foot forward. Help them to improve rather than
reprimanding them for not playing well.

Pay equal attention to each player in the team. Research in this
filed shows that coaches tend to spend comparatively more time
with the best players (up to seven times more!).

Don’t wait for the problems to arise to sort them out.

Add force to the player’s confidence by harmonizing criticism with
praise. When it comes to coaching high school soccer, tilt the
balance slightly more towards praise.

Trust me. When you apply these rules to your training sessions,
the benefits will be much more that you’ll expect.
