Let's face it that like confidence, self-control in coaching high school
soccer is an option that players can choose. Self-control strategies
in soccer coaching depend upon the relationship between
emotions and thoughts. We all know that our state of mind
influences our emotions, which in turn strengthens our
performance.

With a view to help the players in learning the skill and discipline of
self-control, there is a 12 step strategy which I shall discuss with
you. Nevertheless, it’s imperative that players agree to these
steps after that are sure that it holds a lot of importance for them.

What’s more, the players should also be prepared to take full
responsibility for the actions they take. The 12 steps are explained
below.

1. Awareness: When coaching youth soccer, help players identify
their weak points. Help your players evaluate the reasons how,
where and when they lost control on the ground in their past.

2. Understanding: Help the players acknowledge the feeling that
changed their thinking and caused them to lose their emotional
steadiness.

3. Differences: Let the players recall situations in the past when
they did and did not lost control. Let them judge the distinction
between their behavior, attitudes, and emotions then.

4. Problem: When coaching high school soccer, attempt to pinpoint
the problem. For example: Is it the guilt of letting the whole team
down because of their performance?

5. Belief: The players should manage to raise their expectations
from them including self-control as one of the behaviors. Give
confidence to players to change themselves.

6. Reinforcement: A change in behavior is promoted by
reinforcement. Therefore, you must not forget your duty as a coach
to recognize and honor the improvements of players so that they
stick to these.

7. Goals: To guide the players through skill upgradation process,
set a series of small goals for them. Help the players understand
the connection between thoughts, feelings, and actions.

8. Techniques: To maintain the confidence level, employ a set of
behavioral practices. For example: Players must know which path
to follow in a certain situation.

9. Plan: In football coaching, train the players to systematically and
considerably follow their goals.

10. Progress: Help them being patient. Let the players understand
that the ups and downs are integral parts of path to improvement.

11. Setbacks: Let the players understand that setbacks are there
to stay. Therefore, try to learn something new from every setback.

12. Remembrance: Last but by no means the least, make the
players understand that they are trying to change for a reason.
The players must always know that why and what are they doing.
What would the change mean to them for their future?

For a soccer player to achieve a perfect performance state, the
player must be trained for relaxed swiftness. This simply means
use of full energy without stress.

You must not make any mistake about it. You must include
relaxation techniques in coaching high school soccer and train the
players on how to control the thought process so that they can
keep themselves stress-free.
