If you've been suffering from acne for any amount of time, you're probably
already aware of all the remedies and treatments out there for clearing your
face of those awful pimples...but how about acne scars treatment? Now that
you've gotten rid of the actual acne, you're left with the aftermath in the
form of scars. If the scarring is mild, there are some medications that can be
quite helpful in clearing this up and restoring your complexion.
If the scars are more severe however, you will want to visit a dermatologist as
he/she will be able to recommend and administer the proper treatment to restore
your skin to its normal state. These treatments consist of skin resurfacing
therapy and surgical procedures. They are a very effective form of acne scars
treatment, some of which are chemical peels, dermabrasion, and laser
treatments. Again, you will want to make sure and consult with your
dermatologist to determine which method will be the safest and most effective
for your skin type before settling on any particular treatment.
Here is a brief description of some of these treatments:
Laser resurfacing- Using lasers to treat acne scars is not only one of the most
effective treatments out there, but also one of the most advanced. What the
laser does is target the dermis, or top layer of skin. It burns away the dead
skin cells and excess waste material to reveal a fresh new layer of skin
underneath. As the skin heals, it replaces the old, damaged layer of skin that
the laser removed. The treatment usually takes about half an hour to an hour,
and normally takes a couple weeks for the skin to completely heal. It should
also be noted that the skin will likely be somewhat red during the healing
process.
Dermabrasion- This is another effective method of acne scars treatment.
Dermabrasion is similar to laser treatment in that it removes the damaged top
layer of skin. This is done by scraping it away with an abrasive disc. The
abraded skin is replaced by the new layer of skin as it heals. Recovery time
can be about ten days to a few weeks, and sometimes multiple treatments are
required. Microabrasion is a less intense version of this method, and scrapes
away a thinner layer of skin, thus resulting in a shorter healing period.
Chemical peels- With this method, the top layer of skin is burned away by
applying different types of acids. As with the other procedures mentioned, this
reveals the new layer of skin that replaces the old one. The process of
applying the chemicals usually takes about 20 minutes to half an hour, and
healing time is a week or two. The skin will be red during the healing process
and may be discomfortable. For mild scarring this is probably the most
desirable form of acne scars treatment. As usual, always discuss the treatments
thoroughly with your dermatologist before deciding which one to go with.
