------------------ ARTICLE START ------------------

Energy conservation is the most talked about topic in business circuits today.
As the gap between demand and supply of oil becomes wider, governments and
businesses are joining hands to tap replenishable natural resources and
implement energy efficient practices. The threat of global warming is apparent
in unseasonal climatic changes and catastrophes that are hitting nations across
the globe.

Green consulting companies help businesses build a sustainable and eco-friendly
infrastructure. They also educate the workforce on simple steps that reduce
non-biodegradable waste and save energy. Actions such as switching off
equipment when not in use, avoiding the use of polystyrene disposables,
reusing, recycling, and taking double sided prints can be practiced by every
individual in every office. Though small, these measures add up to make a big
difference in conserving energy.

A business has to do much more than preach green practices to its employees. It
has to make changes in its way of working to contribute towards energy
conservation and be a role model to its peers. By installing VOIP and business
phone systems that support teleconferencing and web conferencing, travel costs
can be cut down drastically. The quality of these communications is excellent
and employees can participate in any conference irrespective of where it is
held. What's more, they can do this from the comfort of their homes and at any
time of day. Think of the savings in terms of commuting and traveling costs,
and fuel consumption.

Many businesses have taken internal operations such as finance, payroll and HR
totally online. By doing this, they have been successful in improving
performance and profits while maintaining a lean model. Online operations cut
down on paper usage, ink usage and power consumption.

Businesses should advocate the use of organic and recycled materials by
following the practice themselves. Energy efficient lighting, thermostats,
water and toilet appliances are widely available and can be procured in bulk
for installation at offices. Companies manufacturing computer storage devices,
parts and accessories are also focusing on developing equipment that reduces
carbon footprint and increases system performance. Even if the costs of such
appliances are higher than their energy hogging counterparts, they more than
make up for it in the long-term savings.

An increasing number of businesses are looking at diversifying their energy
source. They are working to harness other forms of energy like nuclear, solar,
tidal, natural gas, biomass, etc. Though this move has become more a necessity
than a preference with oil becoming costlier and scarcer, any reason that
propels organizations towards energy conservation is good.

Another carrot is the federal tax credit to small businesses for making energy
efficiency upgrades. While not directly affecting consumers, manufacturers of
energy efficient washing machines, dishwashers and refrigerators are eligible
for tax breaks themselves, which may lead to increased availability and a
reduction in prices for these energy-saving appliances in the future.

Building a sustainable business calls for some right actions today. No more
passing the buck. We cannot undo the damage our environment has already borne,
but we can certainly take steps to minimize it in the future. It's the least we
can do for the planet that sustains us.
