You spend one-third of your life sleeping. Sleep is essential to your health.
Without enough sleep you quickly become irritable and less efficient. You could
survive over starvation over three weeks. Yet a loss of sleep for even four or
five days would be serious. You would lose the ability to think and make good
judgments. You would make mistakes and become unable to pass simple tests. You
might even have hallucinations, or begin to see things that aren't really there.

Why do people need to sleep? What happens to the body during sleep? Does
everybody dream? What are dreams? Questions such as these puzzle us. They
puzzle people who study sleep too. In their efforts to find answers to such
questions, sleep researchers have learned many interesting things about sleep
and dreams. But they still do not know all they want to know. Why people sleep,
and what exactly happens during sleep, remain fascinating mysteries.

During sleep, many changes take place in the body. The body produces less heat.
Body temperature drops about one degree. The heart beat slows down. Blood
pressure is lowered. Breathing becomes slower.

All your senses are dulled in sleep, even the sense of pain. But you can still
respond to signals that are important to you, as when someone calls your name.
Some secretions in the body are reduced. For example, secretions in your nose
are lessened. That is why you got some relief from a cold during sleep.
Secretions from the salivary glands are also reduced.

However, some secretions in the body are increased in sleep. For example, those
from the sweat glands are stepped up. Also, during the growing years, large
amount of growth hormones, necessary fro proper growth, are secreted from the
pituitary gland during sleep.

Except for short movements now and then, the voluntary muscles are at rest most
of the night. This gives them a chance to recover if muscle fatigue is present.
Physical rest alone does not substitute for sleep. If you rest in bed, relaxed
but awake all night, you will still feel very sleepy in the morning. Your
performance will suffer accordingly. A person must sleep for more reasons than
just physical rest. Yet scientists do not know all the reasons.

Although your body rest during sleep, your brain continues to be active. It
never shuts down completely. Some parts of the brain, though, are more active
than others. Many areas of the brain are especially active during dreaming.
