According to self-determination theory, there are three motivational orientations: autonomy, controlled and impersonal. Well, first of all, what are motivational orientations? Well, these can be described as tendencies to which an individual motivates with time and again. Autonomy motivational orientation is in an individual when he or she is drawn to environments that motivate a person internally or intrinsically, that is from within. He or she seeks challenges. Further, feedback is important to the person. These are the types who assume greater responsibility for their actions. Controlled motivational orientation is in an individual who is "controlled" more by external factors of rewards and punishments. Pressure, wealth, fame and so on and so forth are very important to this kind of individual. Impersonal motivational orientation is in an individual who attributes the events that happen to him or her as a result of fate or simply believing that things are beyond his or her control. These people tend to be apathetic and has very low or no motivation at all. The General Causality Orientations Scale can help you identify your motivational orientation. Now, why is it important to know your motivational orientation? Well, other than increasing self-knowledge, you can see whether you are being the person you want to be or whether you still are far from your ideal self. Well, it would seem that most people would want the autonomy motivational orientation to predominate within them. The three orientations are of course present in all persons to a certain extent. If you have a high autonomy motivational orientation, then you may also have healthier self-esteem, ego development and self-actualization (as proposed in Maslow's hierarchy of needs). It has even been found out those cardiac patients that have this as the predominant orientation to have had greater success in their surgical operations. If you have a high controlled motivational orientation, then you may be prone to being too conscious in public settings and to the so-called Type A personality. And if you have a high impersonal motivational orientation, then you may tend to be more anxious and depressed. The scale mentioned above is available online in the Internet. Just search for it in Google or other trusted search engines. Remember, to be honest when answering self-assessment tests. There is no use for you to lie to yourself. So, assess your motivational orientation and see what motivates you. You can use this knowledge to be a better person, and to know what plans to make for your future.
