I've been actively birding in Warren County since 1967 and got a new county
bird today! On my way to work this morning, on Highway 65/69 in northern
Warren County, I did a double-take and nearly drove off the road as a male
Pileated Woodpecker flew across the highway just in front of me. For those
of you familiar with the area, this was about halfway between Scotch Ridge
Road and Carpenter Street, a rather peculiar place to see this species. The
North River is not far north of there, and the woodpecker was followed soon
after by a Great-tailed Grackle. All I know is that Pilpecker is certainly
not something I ever expected out here in rural suburbia.
