This morning I was surprised to hear the familiar song of a
Yellow-throated Vireo in our Ames backyard. We have a pair in the
neighborhood each year, but I was surprised by the early date. So, I
spent about 10 minutes waiting and watching and finally spotted the
bird, a beautiful male Yellow-throated Vireo. I believe this is a
record early spring arrival date by a few days.
Things are progressing up in north Iowa quickly too. The Winnebago
River is very high, and there are lots of blooming flowers and a few
early migrants. I had a record-early Broad-winged Hawk on 3 April
along the Wapsipinicon River in Chickasaw County. Sent in
documentation as Steve suggested in his recent IOU News article.
