A Short-eared Owl flushed off the "longspur field" early this morning as
I started looking for Smith's. A group of eight SMLO was found on the
approach to what turned out to be around 300 Laplands- a really big
bunch for this late, although I also had 150 in southern Kossuth two
evenings ago. A treat this morning was a couple of occasions of flight
song given by male Laps enjoying the warmth and lack of wind. They
didn't fly up specifically to sing like they will be farther north in a
couple weeks, but single males twice in a half hour peeled off swirling
flocks to glide and flutter over and give the pipes a try.
