Yesterday I found another field that has Henslow's Sparrows. This first one I
found is about a quarter mile east on the FF Loop Trail from Pleasant Plain Rd
and the new one is a few hundred yards further east on the left as you turn to
go south on the trail. The field is huge and not planted for at least the last
3 years. One day when I'm feeling it I want to walk these fields and see how
many Henslow's might be there. Today there were at least 5 in the first field,
yesterday only heard one for sure. On the way out so many other birds were
calling I couldn't really get a good feel for how many I was hearing but on the
way back by the Henslow's were the only birds singing.
While I'm posting. Today I found 5 White-crowned Sparrows along the trail
there. Also FOY: Two Gray Catbirds, Two Eastern Towhees, many Common
Yellowthroats. The last two days had marvelous sunsets--I had almost forgot
Iowa in the spring at sunset and sunrise.
While I'm posting. Thursday I walked the back areas at Port Louisa--have been
wanting to do that for a long time. It's a nice area and am surprised I have
seen only one or two posts from there for three years? I saw 4 immature Bald
Eagles, and a Norther Harrier sailing about. Only a few ducks but seems like it
would be a good spot for them in migration. A couple of shorebirds were there.
