Saturday (5/8) I birded Winneshiek Co. and ended up with 66 species for the day (in spite of the wind and rain) including:
Several warblers at different locations, the most at the public hunting area at the intersection of River Rd and 143rd Ave NE of Decorah. Six sparrow species in a mowed field in the Upper Iowa River Access public area on Coon Creek Rd. Lark, Vesper, and Savannah were new for me for the county. FOS singing Marsh Wren in addition to the Sandhill Cranes at Cardinal Marsh. Yesterday evening the kids and I found a Solitary Sandpiper in Emma McCarthy Lee Park in Ames. This morning (5/10) Torre Hovick and I made a run to Boone Co. for the Little Blue Heron. Also had two Great Egrets in the same wetland. At Harrier Marsh we had Jacob Newton's grebe (we thought it looked more like an Eared although it spent very little time above the water) as well as a Redhead, two singing Soras, and a singing Marsh Wren. At Larry Dau's house we tried for the Spotted Towhee with "inconclusive" results although we ended up with eight sparrow species. Thanks again to Larry for sharing his birds!
