The hot south winds blew in some good birds last night. I made a trip to
Union Slough NWR and back before it got hotter. Lots of Empids around,
new warblers (13 species including Magnolia, Mourning, N. Waterthrush,
and Blackpolls), a smattering of Swainson's Thrushes, Trumpeter cygnets,
and good raptors. It's that stage of shorebird habitat now where the
flooded fields are dried, there's a bit of flooded riverbottom left, and
the regular good spots are too full of water. Highlights:
Buffalo Creek Access (south end of the refuge)-
singing male Black-throated Blue Warbler
24 White-rumped Sandpipers
Swainson's Hawk
Plum Creek Dam of Des Moines R north of Algona-
subadult Mississippi Kite, the first I've seen here that wasn't a
migrating hawk-spot in the sky
2 singing male Prothonotary Warblers (another at Algona)
Good Birding,
