Joan and I visited Springbrrok Park in Guthrie County yesterday. One of my
goal birds in planning this trip was to see Summer Tanagers, but in the
meantime I found two in Boone County. I still wanted to see a full red male.
Matt Wetrich has always said one pair can be found by the education center. We
tried there, with no success. However and impressive number of Bluebirds and
young were in that area. We then went for lunch at the CCC shelter area
further into the park. No more got out of the car and heard Summer Tanagers.
A full red male and yellow/orange female were present and female was carrying
food in her bill.
Here are some highlights:
Summer Tanagers 2, (carrying food for young)
Red-Headed Woodpecker 2
Yellow-Throated Vireo 2 (seemed also to be gathering food)
Redstarts at least 15-20 (everywhere on path around lake)
Scarlet Tanager 1
Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher 5-6
Woodthrush 2

We found an unusal sight as we left our house. In a soybean field a half mile
from my house at E57 and Magnolia Ave in Boone County there was a lone Snow
Goose standing near the road feeding in the beans. Went by 12 hours later and
still there. Seeing these in Boone COunty since March!
