Tyler Harms and I birded several locales in Dickinson County this morning and saw the following birds of note:
2 Common Loons at Spirit Lake 1 adult California Gull at the Spirit Lake landfill (this reinforces my belief that all concentrations of gulls in late summer and early fall should be checked for this species, which is probably annual in Iowa) 2 Say's Phoebes at the previously described locale 4 Blue Grosbeaks - a pair at the Say's Phoebe spot and 2 single males north of there Other birds I saw en route included: 1 Least Bittern near Gilmore City, Pocahontas Co. 1 Black-crowned Night-Heron and 1 male Great-tailed Grackle at Sunken Grove L. 2 male Prothonotary Warblers near Bradgate, Humboldt Co. 1 male Scarlet Tanager and 1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher with a fledgling at Bradgate A. 1 male Blue Grosbeak south of Plover, Pocahontas Co.
