This is a handy tool for anyone making a birding trip or otherwise into the state of Iowa. ************************ Species in ALL CAPS can be classified into three categories in the state of Iowa: 1) UNRECORDED, ACCIDENTAL or Casual; 2) A RARE but regular species; or 3) record early or late date or unusual for time of year. Any species with three asterisks (***species***) would represent a first record for Iowa (UNRECORDED) and should be observed and documented very carefully. Species with two asterisks (**species**) are species that are either ACCIDENTAL, CASUAL, or a rare regular species, and should also be documented. Species with one asterisk (*species) should have some details of the observation provided. SOUTHEAST: WAPELLO COUNTY: 2 MISSISSIPPI KITES were seen in Ottumwa on the 10th. LEE COUNTY: A CHUCK-WILLS-WIDOW was seen at the Croton Unit of Shimek SF on the 10th. 7 WHITE-EYED VIREOS were seen at the Croton Unit of Shimek SF on the 11th. 2 BEWICKS WRENS were seen at the Argyle junkyard on the 11th. Highlights from the Donnelson Unit of Shimek SF on the 11th included a male PINE WARBLER, WORM-EATING WARBLER, and 2 male HOODED WARBLERS. Highlights from the Croton Unit of Shimek SF on the 11th included CERULEAN WARBLER, KENTUCKY WARBLER, and WORM-EATING WARBLER. WASHINGTON COUNTY: A WILSONS SNIPE was seen on the 11th. JEFFERSON COUNTY: A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen in the southeast part of the county on the 11th. SOUTH CENTRAL: MADISON COUNTY: 3 NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRDS were seen northwest of Bevington on the 13th. A LARK BUNTING was seen in the yard of Eugene and Eloise Armstrong on the 15th. CENTRAL: GREENE COUNTY: 2 LEAST BITTERNS were seen at Dunbar Slough on the 12th. POLK COUNTY: An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was seen in a flooded field east of Ankeny on the 16th. NORTHWEST: DICKINSON COUNTY: The SAYS PHOEBES, which have been seen at the Freda Haffner Kettle Hole for the past week, were last seen on the 11th. An adult CALIFORNIA GULL was seen at the Spirit Lake landfill on the 9th. 3 RED-NECKED GREBES were seen at Grovers Lake on the 11th. A LEAST BITTERN was seen at Dugout Creek on the 11th. POCAHONTAS COUNTY: A LEAST BITTERN was seen near Gilmore City on the 9th.
