After being picked up at the Des Moines airport early this afternoon, I was treated to 35+ American White Pelican while traveling on HWY 65N beyond mile marker 74 in the flooded farmland near the Des Moines River. I live in Delmar, NY. The closest I could have gotten to this bird (1) of late at home would have been at Jamaica Bay in Queens. It's a life bird for me having previously only seen the Brown Pelican while visiting Texas. I realize this occurrence is due to the flooding which has caused losses/hardship for many people. I wish these folks a swift recovery and the birds a healthy migration. Also in the vicinity were Great Blue Heron (6), Great Egret (8), and Tree Swallow (150?).
