Audubon Mag. just ran an article on unusual Rufous Hummingbird sightings, in their March/April 2010 issue. Its titled "The Drifter" and the title line reads "More and more, rufous hummingbirds are turning up in unusual places. Is this a result of our changing climate, or are birders paying closer attention?"
There doesn't seem to be any scientific evidence of range expansion, and opinions are mixed. The article is an interesting read..
