We had over a quarter-inch of rain come down between 6:30 (sunrise-ish) and 7:15 this morning with very little wind. I took the dogs over to the cemetery about 7:30 under broken, multi-layered cloud cover with bits of blue sky poking through, and noted a migratory flock of nighthawks at about 7:45. Approximately 80 nighthawks were in a very compact flock in steady powered flight just over treetop level heading directly north to south. I figure they had to have been coming through Minnesota during the night, and chose to continue as they just caught the back side of our rain line upon entering Iowa. If they had been roosting close to our area, they would have been rather soaked and surely not in hurry to start movement until dried out. Now the sun's out and it's going to cook up more rain later today.
