I walked a likely area of good Smith's Longspur habitat this morning in
Emmet county near Burr Oak Lake without kicking up any longspurs at all. My
guess is that they are around somewhere. With all the rain in September the
lake was full of water and no mud at all despite the draw down occurring at
that location. Shorebirds have a much better perspective on the landscape
than I do and I am sure they are finding somewhere to rest this fall, but I
sure have not been able to figure out where it is!

Subject: [ia-bird] Karnack's Smith's Longspur prediction
Smith's Longspur is one of the target species for the upcoming fall
meeting at Neal Smith NWR, and they draw attention wherever they are found
in the state. The big difficulty lies in finding the right habitat
conditions. So, add this location in northern Pocahontas County to your
list of search areas: a new WPA located in T93N, R33W, section 14 (SW1/4).
I've not seen the site in person, but based on the results of previous FWS
grassland restorations, this spot should be good for Smith's this month
and again next spring.
