Two similar days with this mild pattern-- Sunday= 102 raptors total (48
Red-tails, 21 Turkey Vultures, 1 Red-shouldered Hawk [highlight]); Monday= 107
raptors total (67 Red-tailed Hawks and 21 Sharp-shinned Hawks). Our season
total is around 8500 raptors of 16 species-- we are still confident about
recording two more annually appearing raptor species (Rough-legged Hawk and the
much less common Prairie Falcon) before the end of the season. We remain
hopeful about a third raptor-- Ferruginous Hawk, which has a history of
appearing at HNCH (except for the last two years). We still seem to be on track
for an 18-19 species/11,000 raptor season. That would be the third best season
in HNCH history. The main variable at this point is the Red-tailed Hawk flight,
which has been very slow so far.
