Saw it at 11:45 today. We had waited about 30 minutes and had just started
wondering how much longer we would wait when it flew into my binoc field. As we
left we were marveling at the odds of it finding that house, an experienced
birders house, out of all the houses in Des Moines.
Spotted a Bonaparte's and Herring Gull among the 1200 or so Ring-billeds out
from Elk Rock at Red Rock Lake. Also there were 20 Green-winged Teal there. At
the spillway there were zillions of Ring-billed Gulls and very possibly other
kinds but it was getting late and we were getting dizzy trying to pick out
something different from the swirl--how badly we wanted a Black-legged
Kittiwaki
to be there.
I was a little surprised to see a Meadowlark still around at 135th St near
Packwood. It was sitting where we had seen Western Meadowlarks this summer and
I
am wondering if the Western hangs around a little longer than the Eastern? We
didn't have time to stop for an ID.
