The wisdom on this subject within posts from Doug Harr and Jim
Dinsmore cannot be topped. Each is a very dedicated conservationist
with great expertise, and many years of direct experience with this
very important issue.
I only wish to restate one critical fact that I believe only one other
person on this thread had briefly pointed out........
The most recent national data that I've seen shows Iowa being dead
last among all states in the percentage of land area which has public
ownership/management. This is a terrible embarrassment!!! Over-
crowded states such as those near the Atlantic Coast have a higher
percentage of their land area set aside for the enjoyment of their
citizens and future citizens, not to mention wildlife and native
vegetation. Iowans deserve much better than that!!!!
If the misinformed legislature, elected by misinformed voters, won't
take serious measures to improve this horrible situation, this state's
birders should partner with all others who recreate outdoors and
demand positive change.
