This morning I took a leisurely drive along the Ocheyedan and Little Sioux Rivers west and north of Spencer. The snow and ice still had a grip but it was loosening.
Robins moved across the landscape with a purpose. Flocks of Lapland Longspurs were common as the fields opened up, and a handful of new waterfowl species took advantage of the open water patches in the rivers. The male Northern Harrier was a pale ghost coursing northward, and the dark phase western Red-tail got harassed by crows that wanted it to keep moving west. To borrow from e e cummings, the world today was mud-luscious and puddle-wonderful! Lee A.
