A group of us headed down there this morning. No cranes, but we did see the
snipe and a rusty blackbird.

Subject: [ia-bird] Cone Marsh sightings Sunday

James Huntington and I spent the morning birding Cone Marsh (Louisa County).
Some sightings:

--numerous kettles of American White Pelicans
--16 species of waterfowl (4 geese/12 duck), which included 4 Ross's Geese
--continuing Sandhill Cranes and Loggerhead Shrike
--5 species of shorebirds (Killdeer, both Yellowlegs, Wilson's Snipe and
Pectoral Sandpiper)
--American Pipits
--Winter Wren
--Fox Sparrows
--Vesper Sparrow
--1 Brewer's Blackbird

The Pipits, Brewer's and shorebirds were on the mudflats looking west from T
Avenue. They were very far out and a scope would be needed to view most of them
(the Yellowlegs were closer). Light conditions were not the best today,
unfortunately.

Today we did not find any Rusty Blackbirds.

We saw a Eurasian Collared-Dove in a yard at a farmhouse about 1 block east of
Cone Marsh, the first time I've seen one this near the marsh. They are present
in Lone Tree, just a few miles north of Cone Marsh.
